Spotlight Athlete of the Week: Meet Johnny Boychuk

July 9th, 2015

This week’s spotlight player is 8th year Premier Strength athlete Johnny Boychuk.

Morning workouts are often fuelled by the energy and fun that Johnny brings to the gym. His humour and fun personality has solidified him as a gym favourite. Johnny has explosive speed and currently holds the record for many of the agility drills done in training, including the L Drill and Zig Zag drill for defensemen. As one of the most powerful players in the gym, Johnny is able to use his big frame to move weight explosively, which is evident in the hard hitting style of play he brings to the ice.

On the ice, Johnny is one of the NHL’s most powerful and underrated defensemen. With a razor slap shot from the point and the ability to deliver bone crunching hits, Johnny has established himself as a defensive asset on the ice. Drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2002 NHL entry draft, Boychuk has been able to establish himself as a top pairing defensemen first in Boston after being traded in 2008 and now as the go to shutdown defender on the NY Islanders. Johnny is a Stanley Cup Champion, and has solidified his status as a top NHL defensemen this past playoffs where he was largely credited with shutting down Washington Capitals Star Alex Ovechkin. Fresh off of signing a 7 year contract extension with the Islanders this past March, Johnny is poised to be the shutdown go to on the New York blueline for many years to come. At Premier Strength, we are proud to have been apart of Johnny’s career to this point and look forward for many more summers of training to come!
